Trump Says New Data Centers Must Generate Their Own Electricity โ€” and Pay Communities a “Dividend”

October 21, 2026 ยท admin

President Trump has escalated his intervention in America’s data center boom, declaring that companies building large new facilities must supply their own electricity instead of leaning on local power grids. Writing on Truth Social early Wednesday, he said new and sometimes “gigantic” data centers would be mandated to make their own power, with any surplus given or sold back to the surrounding community or the grid.

The president paired the requirement with a sweetener: to make the projects more welcome, operators should pay the community โ€” or individuals within it โ€” a “dividend” so that local residents share directly in the financial benefits of hosting facilities worth billions of dollars.

From encouragement to mandate

Trump had previously pressed technology companies to volunteer commitments along these lines, and earlier this year many firms promised either to generate their own power or to buy it in ways that limited disruption to neighbours. Turning the expectation into an outright requirement, however, appears to be a new step. How such a mandate would be enforced is not yet clear, and the White House did not immediately respond to questions about the mechanism.

The politics behind the move are easy to read. Opposition to data centers has grown steadily in the communities asked to host them, with residents blaming the facilities for rising electricity costs and strained infrastructure. With midterm elections approaching, the issue has become a live campaign weapon: several Democratic Senate candidates, including Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan, James Talarico in Texas and Sherrod Brown in Ohio, have been attacking opponents over it.

A costly condition for builders

For the industry, self-supplied power is expensive and slow. The largest technology companies have already pledged to build generation alongside their biggest projects, but doing so means navigating permits, fuel supply and local regulation โ€” hurdles that could weigh far more heavily on smaller developers in some states. If enforced, the rule would reshape the economics of the AI build-out, favouring the deepest-pocketed players and pushing new facilities toward places where power can be built fastest. What began as a community-relations problem for the tech industry is fast becoming a defining condition of doing business in the AI era.
