Money Outranks Health, Work and Intimacy as the Top Stressor for American Couples

Finances are the biggest source of stress in America’s committed relationships, shaping how couples think about trust, intimacy and long-term commitment, according to a new report from the CFP Board.

The findings, published in the report “To Have and to Hold: Couples Navigating Money and Commitment” and announced at the CFP Board’s Connections Conference 2026 in Las Vegas, show that nearly two-thirds (65%) of Americans who are married or living with a partner name money as a top relationship stressor โ€” including 34% who call it their number one source of stress.

Money beats every other pressure

Financial strain far outpaced the other worries couples reported. Health was cited by 46%, work-life balance by 36%, household chores by 35%, job stress or insecurity by 33%, intimacy by 30% and parenting by 27%. The pattern held across gender, race, income level, education and investment size โ€” no group, the report notes, is immune.

Yet for all its weight, money remains the conversation couples most avoid: 46% said it is the most uncomfortable subject to discuss with their partner, ahead of every other difficult topic in the survey.

Talking about it is the treatment

CFP Board chief executive K. Dane Snowden argues that money is rarely just about money โ€” it is where a couple’s biggest questions surface: what they value, and which trade-offs they are willing to make. Couples do not need to agree on every dollar, he says, but open conversations and a clear financial plan can turn hard choices into decisions they own together.

The practical advice that follows from the research is modest but powerful: schedule regular, low-pressure money check-ins rather than waiting for a crisis, be transparent about debts and spending, and agree on shared goals before debating individual purchases. The couples who fare best, the report suggests, are not the richest โ€” they are the ones who actually talk.
