Luang Prabang Lights Up the Mekong for Its Fire Boat Festival This Weekend

One of Southeast Asia’s most atmospheric festivals returns this weekend, as the heritage town of Luang Prabang in northern Laos hosts its Fire Boat Festival โ Boun Ork Phansa, or Lai Heua Fai โ from October 24 to 26.
Marking the end of Buddhist Lent
The festival falls at Ok Phansa, the end of the three-month Buddhist Lent, when monks emerge from their rainy-season retreat. To celebrate, communities build ornate model boats decorated with candles, flowers and offerings, carry them through the streets in procession, and launch them onto the river after dark, where they drift away carrying light โ and, symbolically, bad luck โ with them. Temples and homes glow with lanterns, and a traditional fire boat competition gives villages and organisations the chance to out-build and out-decorate each other.
Events will centre on the town’s temples and the That Chomsi stupa, which crowns the hill at the heart of the old town, with worship, performances, lantern lighting and illuminated displays spread across the historic centre. No general closure of the town is planned, but visitors should expect busy streets around the main sites and are asked to respect worship and local customs โ modest dress at temples, and no interrupting ceremonies for photographs.
A town made for it
Few places could host such a festival better. Luang Prabang sits at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, ringed by forested mountains, and was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List in 1995 for its remarkably preserved blend of traditional Lao architecture and French colonial buildings. During Lai Heua Fai, candlelight on the water doubles the town’s famous golden-hour beauty โ a strong argument for timing a Laos trip to late October.
