AI Course Enrolments in Ghana Jump 95% as Learners Race to Build Digital Skills, Coursera Reports

Ghanaian learners are signing up for artificial intelligence courses at nearly double last year’s rate, according to new data from online learning platform Coursera โ a sign of how quickly workers and students are trying to prepare for an AI-shaped job market.
The Coursera Global Skills Report 2026, released on October 19, recorded a 95 per cent year-on-year increase in enrolments from Ghana in AI-related micro-credential courses. Interest in AI security learning grew even faster, surging 235 per cent, while enrolments in critical-thinking courses rose 66 per cent, complex problem-solving 39 per cent and innovation-related learning 27 per cent.
Technical skills and human skills, together
The pattern suggests learners are not chasing technical skills alone. The parallel growth in critical thinking and problem-solving points to an understanding that employers want people who can evaluate information, apply new tools responsibly and solve problems โ not simply operate software. Coursera’s findings reflect a global shift in which short, stackable micro-credentials have become a mainstream route for working adults to update their skills without leaving their jobs.
Strong demand, but a gap to close
The report also carries a warning. Ghana ranked 89th out of 98 countries on Coursera’s AI-Human Skills Synergy Index, which measures how well AI competencies are developing alongside complementary human skills and the conditions needed to apply them โ placing eighth among the 11 Sub-Saharan African countries assessed. In other words, enthusiasm for AI learning is outpacing the broader capabilities and infrastructure needed to turn it into workplace impact.
The findings land as Ghana implements its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, launched by President John Dramani Mahama on April 24, 2026, to position the country as an African AI hub. The strategy prioritises AI education, digital infrastructure, data governance, applied research and adoption across key sectors โ the very foundations the Coursera index suggests now need investment to match learners’ ambition.
