US Private Hiring Slows Again as Employers Add an Average of 18,500 Jobs a Week, ADP Finds

October 21, 2026 ยท admin

Hiring by US private employers slowed noticeably heading into October, according to the latest high-frequency estimate from ADP. In the four weeks ending October 3, 2026, private employers added an average of 18,500 jobs per week, the payroll giant reported on Tuesday, October 20.

The figure comes from the NER Pulse, a weekly update of the monthly ADP National Employment Report. It is calculated as a four-week moving average on a seasonally adjusted basis, which smooths out week-to-week noise and gives economists, employers and jobseekers a faster read on the labour market than the monthly reports alone.

A clear step down from September’s pace

The slowdown is visible in the recent run of data. The weekly average stood at 26,000 in the week ending September 26 and 25,250 the week before that, before easing to 22,500 in mid-September and now 18,500. Earlier in the summer the series had been climbing steadily from below 10,000 a week in late July, so the latest reading marks a reversal of that improvement rather than a collapse.

ADP cautions that the numbers are preliminary and may change as more payroll data is added. Even so, the direction of travel matters for anyone making career decisions this autumn: a softer weekly pace suggests employers are becoming more selective, filling essential roles while delaying discretionary hiring.

What it means for jobseekers

A cooling โ€” but not freezing โ€” jobs market changes the tactics that work. Roles are still being created every week, yet competition for each opening is likely to be stiffer, and hiring processes may run longer as companies weigh candidates more carefully. Workers with in-demand, demonstrable skills remain in the strongest position, while those planning a move may benefit from applying earlier in the autumn hiring season rather than waiting for the new year.

The next NER Pulse updates will show whether the October dip is a brief pause or the start of a slower winter for US hiring.
