Caring for More Than 1,000 Animals, Cincinnati Shelter Waives Adoption Fees to Beat Overcrowding
October 21, 2026 ยท admin

Every kennel counts when you are caring for 1,083 animals. That is the reality at Cincinnati Animal CARE, Hamilton County’s shelter, which reported 536 dogs among its residents as of October 14 โ 321 of them housed on site โ and is now waiving adoption fees to move animals into homes and relieve the crowding.
The promotion, reported by Spectrum News 1 on October 20, covers eligible animals aged six months and older and runs through October 25, 2026. County residents adopting a dog will still pay the standard $19.75 dog license fee, but the adoption fee itself โ often the barrier between a family and a pet โ is gone.
Why empty kennels matter
Adoption is not just a happy ending for one animal. Each pet who goes home frees space, staff time and resources for the next stray, surrender or cruelty case that arrives at the door. In a shelter system, a full house is a crisis; every adoption is breathing room.
The shelter, which operates a main campus at 3949 Colerain Avenue and a second location at 4210 Dane Avenue, is also reminding residents that there are ways to help beyond adopting. Foster homes take animals temporarily while they wait for permanent families, and volunteers and social-media shares extend the shelter’s reach far beyond its walls.
Officials encourage anyone interested to browse available animals and confirm eligibility on the shelter’s website before visiting. For 1,083 animals in Cincinnati this week, the best news possible is a front door opening โ and a family walking through it.
