Champ the Three-Legged Therapy Dog Wins the 2026 World’s Cutest Rescue Dog Contest

October 21, 2026 ยท admin

Champ is missing a leg. What he is not missing is purpose. The 10-year-old rescue, who works as a therapy dog visiting schools and assisted living facilities, has been named the winner of the 2026 World’s Cutest Rescue Dog Contest โ€” a title his handler says simply confirms what everyone who meets him already knows.

Thousands of voters backed Champ in the contest, which was judged by a panel including Dolores Catania, photographer Elias Weiss Friedman, and CBS Mornings hosts Gayle King, Nate Burleson and Vladimir Duthiers. The runners-up were no less inspiring: Tiberius, an 8-year-old blind dog from Philadelphia, and Bean, a pug rescued in Nogales, Mexico.

A prize that pays it forward

Champ’s win comes with a year’s supply of dog food and a $1,000 donation to a rescue of his family’s choosing. His handler, Carmody, plans to send it to Wagging Tails Rescue NY โ€” the organization that connected them in the first place, closing the loop from rescue to rescuer.

What’s possible, not what’s missing

Therapy dogs like Champ work by invitation in hospitals, schools and care homes, and his days are measured in small, quiet encounters: a nervous student, a lonely resident, a stranger’s hand reaching toward him. As Carmody puts it, he reminds people to focus not on what is missing, but on what is possible.

That may be the real value of a contest like this. Behind every finalist is an animal who was once unwanted, injured or overlooked โ€” and a person who decided that a three-legged, blind or rescued dog was not a lesser dog at all. Champ’s crown belongs, in a way, to all of them.
