After the Election: What Divided Government Could Mean for Small Online Sellers

The November 3 midterm results are in: Democrats will control both the House and the Senate from January 2027, while the White House stays Republican – divided government for the next two years.

For small online sellers and independent businesses, here is what I am watching:

1. Slower lawmaking. Big tax or spending changes need both sides to agree, so most current rules for small businesses are likely to stay as they are through 2027.

2. Trade and tariff debates will continue in Congress. Sellers who import products should keep an eye on shipping and import costs, which can change with policy fights.

3. Consumer confidence matters most. Holiday spending this season will say more about next year’s sales than any single vote in Washington.
