Dow Jumps 530 Points as Strong Earnings and Cheaper Oil Lift Wall Street
October 21, 2026 ยท admin

Wall Street closed mostly higher on Tuesday, October 20, as a strong run of third-quarter earnings and a retreat in oil prices gave investors reason to buy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 529.85 points, or 1.02%, to 52,495.88, while the S&P 500 added 0.28% to finish at 7,712.57. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite slipped just 0.02% to 26,424.82, held back by continued unease over the scale of artificial intelligence spending.
Earnings did the heavy lifting
Industrial and defence names led the advance. 3M surged more than 5% after beating quarterly expectations and raising its full-year guidance, and Northrop Grumman gained more than 4% on its own earnings beat. Money rotated noticeably: health care stocks hit record territory, the small-cap Russell 2000 rose 1.65%, and advancers beat decliners by roughly two to one on the New York Stock Exchange. The market’s fear gauge, the VIX, fell 6.1% to 17.31, signalling a calmer mood.
Oil and yields cooperated
Energy prices provided the other tailwind. West Texas Intermediate crude fell 1.8% to settle at $101.79 a barrel and Brent declined 0.7% to $108.79, as traders weighed reports of diplomacy in the Middle East. Treasury yields also eased, taking some pressure off rate-sensitive shares โ though utilities and real estate still lagged on the day. With Meta and Tesla reporting on Wednesday, investors warned that the rally’s durability will be tested quickly. For now, though, the message from earnings season is that corporate America is in better shape than the doubters feared.
