Musk Ordered Starlink Slowdown That Disabled Ukrainian Drones, Officials Say

Elon Musk personally ordered a slowdown of SpaceX’s Starlink satellite network last week that degraded Ukraine’s battlefield communications and rendered some of its drones useless, according to US officials and other sources familiar with the decision.
Some sources said Musk capped the speeds at which Ukrainian hardware could remain connected to the satellite-based network. The throttling reportedly knocked out some offensive and interceptor drones that depend on a stable, high-speed link โ a reminder of how heavily Ukraine’s military has come to rely on a commercial system controlled by a single private company.
A call with the president
Shortly after the decision became public, Musk discussed it on a call with President Donald Trump, reports say. Another source said the two men had also spoken before the slowdown was imposed, though the substance of those conversations has not been disclosed.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio appeared to back the suggestion that Musk had slowed the network, saying decisions about Ukraine’s access to Starlink were up to SpaceX and its owner, not the White House. That framing underscores the administration’s position that a service Ukraine treats as critical military infrastructure remains, legally and operationally, a private product.
A recurring vulnerability
Ukraine’s dependence on Starlink has been a vulnerability since the early months of the war. Terminals provided by SpaceX underpin communications for frontline units, artillery coordination and drone operations, and previous disputes over coverage and permitted uses have repeatedly raised alarms in Kyiv. This latest episode arrives at a sensitive diplomatic moment, as Washington presses Ukraine toward a negotiated settlement.
For Kyiv, the incident strengthens the case for diversifying its satellite communications. For Washington, it poses an uncomfortable question: how much control over an ally’s war-fighting ability should rest with one businessman, however vital his technology has been.
