Nigeria Makes Agricultural Education 80% Practical in Major Curriculum Overhaul

Nigeria is overhauling how agriculture is taught, shifting the balance of agricultural education decisively from the lecture hall to the field. Under a new federal policy, training will be split 80 per cent practical work and 20 per cent theory.
The reform was announced in Abuja on October 20, 2026, by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, according to Arise News. Alongside the new ratio, the government unveiled 39 agricultural curricula and 31 National Occupational Standards intended to align training with what modern farms and agribusinesses actually need.
Closing the gap between knowing and doing
The change targets a long-standing complaint about agricultural training in Nigeria: many graduates spend years studying crops and livestock in classrooms yet get little chance to apply that knowledge. A student might understand the principles of cultivation or animal care on paper but still be unprepared to manage a farm, operate modern machinery or turn skills into a viable business.
By making hands-on work the dominant share of the programme, the government aims to produce graduates who can step directly into employment, launch their own agricultural ventures and contribute to the country’s food supply. The occupational standards are meant to define, trade by trade, what a competent graduate should be able to do โ giving employers a clearer signal of what a qualification represents.
A wider shift towards skills-based education
Nigeria’s move mirrors a broader international trend towards competency-based training, in which demonstrated practical ability counts for more than time spent in class. For students, the reform promises a more applied course of study; for the agricultural sector, it offers a pipeline of workers trained on real equipment and real production problems rather than theory alone.
How quickly institutions can deliver the practical share โ with the farms, workshops and placements it requires โ will decide whether the 80/20 ambition translates into better-prepared graduates.
