SpaceX and Tesla Form Committees to Explore a Potential Merger
October 21, 2026 ยท admin

Elon Musk has set Wall Street an extraordinary question. Overnight, the billionaire confirmed that SpaceX and Tesla have each formed independent special committees to evaluate a potential merger of the two companies โ a combination that would unite the world’s most valuable carmaker with its most valuable private space company under one roof. Musk described the idea as “a good idea,” and Tesla shares rose about 2.2% in after-hours trading on the news, with SpaceX stock also jumping.
What a deal would create
A merged group would span electric vehicles, batteries, solar energy, humanoid robotics, satellite internet, launch services and artificial intelligence computing. Supporters argue the logic is increasingly hard to ignore: Tesla needs enormous computing capacity for its AI and robotics ambitions, SpaceX is building exactly that kind of infrastructure, and both companies already share technology, talent and, of course, a chief executive. A single listed entity would also give public investors direct exposure to SpaceX, whose third-quarter revenue just surged 161% to $14.6 billion.
Plenty of obstacles
None of this will be simple. Valuing SpaceX for a merger, reconciling the interests of Tesla’s public shareholders with those of SpaceX’s private backers, and satisfying regulators would each be formidable tasks. The creation of independent special committees at both companies is the classic first step designed to show that any deal is negotiated at arm’s length โ a signal that the discussions are serious rather than casual. Tesla’s earnings call on Wednesday, where analysts are certain to press management on the subject, is now the most closely watched event of the week.
